Why we love this coffee
This unique single origin Sumatran coffee is quite exceptional. This coffee is produced by a cooperative named Permata Gayo based in the Northern state of Aceh in Sumatra. It was created in 2006 by small-holder coffee farming villages of the Bener Meriah district.
This coffee is highly sought after because of its particular earthy and fruity notes. If you like strong notes in your coffee, this is an excellent choice.
The unusual way this coffee is processed is traditional in Indonesia and known as giling basah (semi-washed or wet hulled). It dries the coffee efficiently to confront the continuous presence of humidity that exists in this country. This has a dramatic effect on the cup, creating a heavy body, earthiness and low acidity.
The cooperative invests its premiums in local social and environmental projects. These include women’s empowerment programs for female-headed households, providing financial management courses and microcredit schemes to help start new businesses to supplement their income from coffee.
