Hidden away in the Andean mountains, Tolima is a coffee heaven. This region was strategically controlled until not long ago by the rebel group FARC, isolating small coffee producers. Until recently they were an untapped source of specialty coffee. As conflict eased, farmers’ organised into associations investing in infrastructure, creating micro credit programs for their members and investing in social programs. The Association Café del Macizo (where this coffee comes from) was founded in 2003 and represents 111 farmers. The coffee farmers lots are collected, graded and cupped by their association striving for quality premium coffee.
Café del Macizo was one of the first organisations in Colombia to focus on sustainability. Their mission is to produce the best quality coffee sustainably whilst preserving the environment.
Because of their trade focus, coffee producers are currently receiving 35% more income from coffee sales due to its premium. The association members work together with the collective goal of driving quality to achieve the in turn give quality of life for their families.
Tolima is one of the most renowned quality coffee producing regions of Colombia. It has the perfect coffee growing conditions, partly because of its proximity to the Nevado de Huila volcano, providing prime altitude, rich soil, water irrigation systems, shade and local knowledge.
